C&A Detailing: A Journey of Teen Entrepreneurship

While many high school students dedicate their weekends to relaxation and leisure, seniors Aden Atwell and Sam Calderone took a different path—one that involved hard work and dedication. They co-founded C&A Detailing, a car detailing business aimed at earning money for college. What began as a simple idea blossomed into a fully-fledged enterprise, filled with challenges and learning experiences.

The Genesis of C&A Detailing

In the summer of 2025, Atwell and Calderone saw an opportunity. “Sam and I officially started C&A in the summer of 2025 and did our first job on August 15,” Atwell shared. Car detailing was chosen as their focus because both found it gratifying, appreciating the visible transformation that follows a thorough cleaning.

Motivation Behind the Business

For Atwell, the business was more than just a way to make extra money; it played a crucial role in funding his future education. “I decided to start saving for college in my junior year,” he noted. With the rising costs of education, primarily attending Westminster at a hefty $42,000 annually, he realized that early savings would serve him well throughout his college journey.

Learning Through Experience

With no prior experience in car detailing, both students faced a steep learning curve. They had to dive deep into research and practice extensively before charging anyone for their services. “We had no experience detailing before, so we practiced on family and friends’ cars to get it right,” Atwell explained.

Financial Commitment and Tools

Starting a new business meant that Atwell and Calderone needed some financial backing. They invested in essential tools and supplies, amounting to approximately $270. This included everything from detail brushes to pressure washer tips and specialized cleaning chemicals. The combination of their existing equipment and new purchases constituted the foundation of their operation.

The Challenge of Finding Customers

One of the most difficult aspects of launching C&A Detailing was client outreach. The duo experimented with various marketing methods, including organic marketing, word-of-mouth promotions, and door-to-door pitches. Atwell soon discovered that the most effective strategy for them was leveraging customer testimonies to boost their business’s reputation.

Making Connections with Clients

Building strong relationships with customers is paramount in any business, particularly in service-oriented ones like car detailing. Atwell learned this vital lesson the hard way. Although he detailed numerous cars, his client list lacked return customers, a factor he recognized as essential for sustainability.

Time Management and Balancing Responsibilities

Balancing a business with schoolwork and a part-time job could easily overwhelm anyone, especially high school students. Both Atwell and Calderone found that time management was crucial in ensuring they met their academic obligations while maintaining the business. They typically scheduled detailing work on weekends and adjusted their availability during the summer when their schedules became more flexible.

The Drive for Growth

Atwell advises aspiring young entrepreneurs to embrace risks, emphasizing the importance of investment. “You HAVE to lose money to make money. It’s scary when you work a part-time job; the investment might be your entire paycheck, but you have to bite the bullet,” he commented. His insights stem from firsthand experience, showing that calculated risks can yield fruitful results.

Life Lessons Beyond Profits

Reflecting on their entrepreneurial journey, Atwell noted that the experience went beyond financial gains or college savings. Entrepreneurship has equipped him with essential skills such as money management, marketing, and customer relations. He strongly believes that more teens should explore the entrepreneurial route. “Starting your own business is the best way to build connections, gain experience, and learn new skills,” he expressed.

For Aden Atwell and Sam Calderone, C&A Detailing is not merely a weekend endeavor; it symbolizes a pivotal step toward independence, skill development, and financial planning for their futures. They demonstrate how youthful ambition and hard work can lead to valuable life experiences that extend beyond conventional classroom learning.
