Empowering Entrepreneurs: Waubonsee Community College’s Fall Business Academy Programs

Waubonsee Community College (WCC) is set to launch four innovative business academy programs this fall, aimed at providing support for both existing and aspiring entrepreneurs. This initiative, facilitated by the college’s Education and Workforce Development department along with the Illinois Small Business Development Center, underscores WCC’s commitment to fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in the community.

Programs Designed for Growth

Among the offerings for this semester are the Business Growth Academy and its Spanish-language counterpart, Academia de Negocios. These programs cater specifically to business owners who have been operational for at least two years, actively generating revenue, and ready to take the next step in scaling their operations. This focused approach allows mature entrepreneurs to refine their strategies and expand their reach in the marketplace.

Schedule and Location

Both the Business Growth Academy and Academia de Negocios run for ten weeks, with the former set to begin on September 17. Sessions will be conducted Wednesday evenings at WCC’s Sugar Grove Campus. Simultaneously, Academia de Negocios will start on September 18, taking place Thursday evenings at the Aurora Downtown Campus, located at 18 S. River St. This dual offering ensures that accessibility is a priority, providing options for a diverse range of participants.

A Pathway to Empowerment

Suzanne Markin, Workforce Education Manager at WCC, expressed the college’s philosophy on entrepreneurship, stating, “At Waubonsee, we believe entrepreneurship is a pathway to empowerment.” This ethos is woven throughout the academy programs, which are designed to transform bold ideas into thriving business ventures. With the combined expertise of the Workforce and SBDC teams, entrepreneurs are equipped with essential tools, training, and the supportive community they need to flourish.

Supporting New Entrepreneurs

In addition to the programs aimed at established business owners, WCC offers two additional courses tailored for entrepreneurs at the early stages of their business journey: the New Venture Academy and Academia Emprende. These programs provide foundational knowledge necessary for developing a robust business plan and navigating the complexities of starting a new venture.

The New Venture Academy will commence on September 15 and meet Monday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., while Academia Emprende will kick off on September 16, holding sessions Tuesday evenings at the same time. Both programs will take place at the Aurora Downtown Campus, further enhancing convenience for attendees.

Funding and Support

All four academy programs benefit from the Illinois Community College Board’s Noncredit Workforce Training Initiative Grant, ensuring that financial barriers to attendance are minimized. Additionally, the programs are powered by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at WCC, which adds a layer of resources and guidance for students.
