Mississippi State University Launches New Entrepreneurship Major

Introduction to the New Major

Mississippi State University’s College of Business is set to invigorate the entrepreneurial ecosystem by introducing a new major in entrepreneurship. This program aims to equip students with not only the theoretical knowledge but also the practical skills necessary to launch their own ventures or innovate within existing organizations. As Dean Scott Grawe aptly puts it, many students arrive at MSU with the ambition to create something impactful, and this new major is designed to facilitate those dreams.

Building on a Strong Foundation

This pioneering initiative builds on MSU’s longstanding commitment to entrepreneurship education. For many years, the university has offered courses focused on Entrepreneurship, Experiential Innovation, and Family Business Management. The new major complements these existing offerings with additional core courses such as Creativity and Innovation, along with a capstone course titled Business Venture Creation. These new classes aim to provide students with a robust academic framework that bridges theoretical knowledge with actionable skills.

The Role of the E-Center

Students will have the opportunity to enhance their educational experience through the Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach, known as the E-Center. This nationally recognized center provides invaluable resources including coworking spaces, startup funding, and mentorship programs aimed at bolstering student-led ventures. While involvement in E-Center activities—like pitch competitions and mentorship initiatives—is optional, these experiences allow students to apply their classroom learning in dynamic, real-world settings, further preparing them for entrepreneurship.

Learning by Doing

Laura Marler, the Jim and Pat Coggin Endowed Professor of Management, highlights that the E-Center offers numerous experiential learning opportunities for entrepreneurship majors. These hands-on experiences not only sharpen students’ skills but also promote innovation and collaboration. From pitch competitions to mentorship programs, the practical applications of their ideas augment their academic journeys and shape them into well-rounded future entrepreneurs.

An Engaging Community

To foster collaboration and innovation, students in the entrepreneurship program can opt to live in a dedicated entrepreneurship living-learning community. This on-campus housing arrangement promotes interaction among like-minded peers, providing a fertile ground for networking and collaboration. Additionally, MSU’s Entrepreneurship Club (eClub) organizes events throughout the year—including workshops, guest speakers, and networking opportunities—that contribute to a vibrant entrepreneurial culture on campus.

Open to All Students

The new entrepreneurship major is open to a diverse pool of students, including incoming freshmen, transfer students, and current MSU students, particularly those pursuing business administration. Those interested in focusing their academic journey on creativity, innovation, and practical business skills are encouraged to apply.

How to Get Involved

For students who want more information or wish to apply, Kim McLeod, the academic coordinator for the College of Business, is available for inquiries. Prospective students can reach out via email at kmcleod@business.msstate.edu or by phone at 662-325-1891. Conclusion

By blending academic rigor with practical experience, MSU’s College of Business is more than equipped to support students in transforming their entrepreneurial ambitions into reality.
