On Wednesday, August 13, Northumberland County buzzed with youthful energy as young entrepreneurs came together at Staples Cobourg for the much-anticipated annual Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase. This vibrant event was hosted by the Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN), highlighting the potential of the next generation in the local business landscape.
This year’s showcase featured an impressive lineup of 24 youth-run businesses, each crafted through initiatives like the Summer Company program for young entrepreneurs aged 15 to 29, and the My Future My Career program catering to ages 8 to 14. Over the course of the day, participants collectively generated nearly $2,000 in sales and attracted 43 inquiries. This remarkable response underscores a burgeoning community interest in youth-led initiatives and the entrepreneurial spirit.
The event serves as a critical platform for mentorship, coaching, and micro-grants designed to transform ideas into profitable ventures. Young vendors showcased an eclectic mix of products and services—from delicious dog treats and meticulously crafted handmade items to lawn care and unique clothing brands, as well as innovative digital media solutions. This diversity provides young entrepreneurs not only the chance to market their offerings but also to refine their entrepreneurship skills and gain invaluable, practical business experience.
County Warden Brian Ostrander was present at the event, emphasizing the significance of empowering youth as future innovators and economic contributors. His insights highlighted the vital role that programs like BECN’s play in equipping young people with skills, confidence, and the ability to create meaningful impact within the local economy. Such support is essential, as it helps foster a culture of entrepreneurship that can lead to sustainable growth and community resilience.
