In a significant move towards enhancing its energy infrastructure, the Netherlands has awarded a new contract to a consortium led by Amentum (NYSE: AMTM). This partnership, known as NEXUS-NL, includes industry leaders such as Arcadis, Tractebel, and NRG PALLAS, and aims to drive the planning and development of nuclear new builds in the region. The initiative underscores the country’s commitment to not only bolstering energy security but also achieving its ambitious decarbonization targets.
The contract, which could be worth as much as $207 million (€180 million), is structured as a two-year framework agreement with options for three additional one-year extensions. This arrangement was awarded by the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth as part of the Netherlands’ broader strategy for sustainable energy transition. The consortium’s tasks will span across the initial phase of the project, which includes site characterization, technology selection, and planning work for enabling infrastructure such as utility connections and transportation links.
Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy & Environment business, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This award advances our strategy as a leader in gigawatt-scale nuclear new build around the world.” He emphasized Amentum’s extensive experience from complex infrastructure projects in different regions, including the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. This rich background positions the consortium well to support the Netherlands’ goal of expanding its nuclear energy capabilities.
The consortium’s collaborative approach is set to harness the strengths of each member. Amentum will spearhead project management, focusing on technology selection and commercial strategies. Arcadis, renowned for its sustainability initiatives, will handle siting studies and licensing, ensuring that environmental considerations are at the forefront. Tractebel will leverage its engineering expertise to delineate technical requirements and lead front-end design studies, while NRG PALLAS offers specialized knowledge, particularly regarding licensing interfaces specific to Dutch nuclear regulations.
The Dutch government has identified nuclear energy as pivotal to achieving climate neutrality by 2040. As the nation seeks to transition away from fossil fuels, this new nuclear initiative supports its long-term energy strategy, aiming to generate up to two new gigawatt-scale power plants. These facilities are not just intended for electricity generation; they represent a critical component in the larger mosaic of energy security and sustainability within the Netherlands.
