Guam’s Bright Young Entrepreneurs Shine on an International Stage

Two exceptional student-run companies have claimed their place on the global stage by earning the right to represent Guam at an international entrepreneurship competition. These teams, known as Konni’ and Håtsa, were recently recognized as the top contenders in Junior Achievement Guam’s 2025 Company of the Year program, a prestigious initiative that empowers young entrepreneurs.

Celebrating Achievement at Dusit Thani Guam Resort

The culmination of a 20-week program was marked by an awards ceremony held at the luxurious Dusit Thani Guam Resort. During this event, Konni’ was crowned the overall Company of the Year, with Håtsa securing a commendable second place. This celebration of innovation and hard work highlights the potential of Guam’s youth in the world of entrepreneurship.

Competing on an International Level

Both Konni’ and Håtsa will be jetting off to Seoul, South Korea, to face off against student companies from a variety of countries, including the Philippines, Japan, India, Singapore, and Malaysia. This Asia-Pacific Company of the Year competition not only provides these young entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their business acumen but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and cultural exchange among different nations.

Hands-On Experience in Entrepreneurship

The Junior Achievement program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the entrepreneurial process. Participants are involved in everything from product development to marketing and sales. Roles within the teams are well-defined, allowing students to take on leadership positions, such as chief executive officer, chief financial officer, and marketing director, offering them a taste of real-world business operations.

The Innovative Concept of Konni’

Konni’, sponsored by HCA, has crafted a unique CHamoru-themed family card game that seeks to unite families while celebrating Guam’s rich culture and language. This engaging game incorporates local traditions, vocabulary, and island values, making it not just a source of entertainment but a learning tool that fosters appreciation for CHamoru culture.

The team behind Konni’ includes passionate leaders like CEO Mariana Wenden, CFO Noah Combs, COO Emily Shinohara, and CMO Ciara Pangelinan. Their focus on blending entertainment with cultural education is not just commendable but crucial for preserving and promoting Guam’s heritage.

Håtsa’s Melting Pot of Cultures

On the other hand, Håtsa is sponsored by Bank of Hawaii and has developed “The Melting Pot,” a multicultural cookbook. This book features an array of recipes inspired by the diverse cultures that populate Guam, aiming to promote culinary appreciation and cultural awareness. Interactive games and activities included in the cookbook serve to engage readers, encouraging them to explore various cultures through the lens of food.

The Håtsa team is led by an equally impressive group, including CEO Gyubin Suh, CFO Ming Yen “Austin” Tsai, CMO Mariella Borcione, and COO Offeia Wang Yordy. Their project not only celebrates the island’s multicultural identity but also offers a delightful way for families to come together around the dinner table.

Mentorship and Guidance

Throughout the program, both teams benefitted from the invaluable guidance of experienced mentors, Jared Baldwin and Dae Torres. This mentoring relationship is a vital component of the program, as it helps students navigate the complexities of developing and running a business while fostering their leadership skills.

Practical Exposure to Business Operations

Students enrolled in the Company of the Year program devoted several months to building their companies, honing their products, managing finances, and presenting their projects to judges. This immersive experience is intended to provide practical exposure to business operations, cultivating essential skills that will serve these young entrepreneurs well in their future endeavors.

Representing Guam on an International Stage

As these remarkable teams prepare for their international competition, they will not only showcase their innovative business ideas but also represent Guam’s culture and creativity on a broader platform. Their journey is a testament to the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit thriving on the island, promising to inspire future generations of innovators.

The Mission of Junior Achievement Guam

Junior Achievement Guam is committed to promoting financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship among young people. Programs like the Company of the Year initiative play an essential role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the business world while fostering a strong sense of leadership and teamwork.
