Thunderbird School of Global Management: A Decade of Evolution and Impact

Ten years ago, Thunderbird School of Global Management found itself at a pivotal moment in its storied history. With nearly seventy years of experience in pioneering international business education, the school was faced with the challenge of adapting to a rapidly changing global higher education landscape. The question loomed large: How could Thunderbird uphold its rich legacy while simultaneously expanding its global reach?

The Merger with Arizona State University

In December 2014, the answer arrived when Thunderbird officially joined the Arizona State University (ASU) community. This unification brought together two institutions that shared a deep commitment to excellence and global impact. Embedding Thunderbird within ASU’s innovative framework opened up new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration, while still preserving Thunderbird’s unique identity as a leader in global business education.

ASU President Michael Crow aptly highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “The bet was that what we could do together would exceed what either could achieve alone.” The collaboration promised to combine Thunderbird’s global identity and network with ASU’s scale and research capacity.

Reimagining Campus and Community

The merger marked not just a strategic alliance but also a transformation in physical presence and academic offerings. In 2018, Thunderbird announced its departure from its historic Glendale campus, eliciting mixed feelings of nostalgia and excitement about the future. By August 2019, the school had relocated to downtown Phoenix, positioning itself in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. This relocation facilitated unprecedented access to experiential learning opportunities, connecting students with state government, multinational firms, and civic collaborations.

The vision for a new, state-of-the-art global headquarters was realized with support from ASU and a community of alumni and stakeholders. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego remarked on the impact, noting that Thunderbird’s presence in the city reinforced Phoenix’s emergence as a global center for innovation and international collaboration.

The New Global Headquarters

In October 2019, construction on the new headquarters began, and despite facing the challenges posed by a global pandemic, the project continued to progress. By August 2021, the F. Francis and Dionne Najafi Thunderbird Global Headquarters officially opened its doors. The nearly $70 million facility exemplifies modern education with cutting-edge technology and immersive learning environments, while also paying homage to Thunderbird’s storied past.

Designed with input from alumni and other stakeholders, the facility includes collaborative lounges and even a rooftop terrace, known as the Pub at Thunderbird, that serves as a vibrant gathering place for students and alumni, blending the old spirit with a new energy.

Expanding Global Access

The Najafi family’s generous $25 million gift enabled one of Thunderbird’s most transformative initiatives: the Francis and Dionne Najafi 100 Million Learners Global Initiative. Launched in 2022, this program aims to deliver accredited, multilingual business and management education at no cost to underserved learners worldwide. As Dean Charla Griffy-Brown stated, this initiative embodies the mission of expanding access to quality education, creating a community of changemakers globally.

Thunderbird also continued to elevate its standing in higher education. Soon after joining ASU, its Master of Global Management garnered the No. 1 world ranking in the Times Higher Education/Wall Street Journal Business Schools Report, making it the only U.S.-based school to rank in the top five for master’s in management specials.

Academic Achievements and Global Recognition

In the years since, Thunderbird has consistently earned global accolades. It was ranked the No. 1 institution for international trade in the QS International Trade Rankings for four consecutive years (2023–26), surpassing prestigious universities like Columbia and Oxford. “Earning this distinction year after year reflects our commitment to preparing future-ready global leaders,” said Griffy-Brown.

Thunderbird Executive Education also thrived, with its custom programs ranked among the top 25 globally. Furthermore, the Thunderbird Case Series expanded, solidifying the school’s reputation for producing impactful, practitioner-driven case studies.

Student Success and Community Impact

The results of these academic advancements ripple through the careers of Thunderbird graduates, who are making meaningful contributions in over 30 countries, from India to Brazil. This continued focus on global leadership is reflected in the success stories of students like Daniel Chaves, who took his education back to his home country of Ecuador to foster health care innovation.

Chaves’ experience is emblematic of many Thunderbird alumni, who leverage the school’s resources to drive impactful change around the world. With a spirit of collaboration and mentorship, alumni involvement remains a cornerstone of Thunderbird’s mission.

Ongoing Alumni Engagement

Alumni like Kimberly Wiehl emphasize the importance of giving back to their alma mater, contributing to scholarships, mentorship programs, and much more. Wiehl, active in various alumni initiatives, does not merely represent the past; instead, she is a living example of Thunderbird’s commitment to enriching the future of global leaders.

A Legacy in Transition

Throughout its first decade with ASU, Thunderbird has stayed true to its legacy while embracing a forward-looking vision. As it steps into its second decade, the school remains focused on harnessing Phoenix’s rapid growth as a hub for innovation. With a commitment to experiential learning, Thunderbird aims to seamlessly integrate modern business paradigms—such as artificial intelligence and geopolitics—into its educational framework.

Michael Crow encapsulated this journey well: “The results speak for themselves. The next decade will test every institution that claims to prepare leaders for a connected world.” With a rich history and an ambitious agenda, Thunderbird stands poised to lead the transformation of global education and foster the next generation of principled global leaders.
